چکیده

This special issue on \Regional weather models" complements the Oc-tober 1995 special issue on \Climate and weather modeling", which fo-cused on global models. In this introduction we review the similarities and diierences between regional and global atmospheric models. Next, the structure of regional models is described and we consider how the basic algorithms applied in these models innuence the parallelization strategy. Finally, we give a brief overview of the eight articles in this issue and discuss some remaining challenges in the area of adopting regional weather models to parallel computers.

MM90: A Scalable Parallel Implementation of the Penn State/NCAR Mesoscale Model (MM5)

This paper describes MM90, a parallel regional weather model based on the Penn State/NCAR MM5. Parallelization of nite diierencing, horizontal interpolation, and nesting on distributed-memory (message-passing) computers is handled transparently using the RSL library package. Fortran90 modules, derived data types, dynamic memory allocation, pointers, and recursion are used, making the code modul...

A Methodology For Developing High Performance Computing Models: Storm-Scale Weather Prediction

A methodology for developing future generations of a storm-scale weather prediction model for Massively Parallel Processing is described. The forecast model is the Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS), a three-dimensional, fully compressible, non-hydrostatic predictive model. In the short term, the computational goals include developing a portable, scalable model for distributed memory SI...

Three-dimensional Visualization for Support of Operational Forecasting at the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games

To support precision forecasting at the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, a parallelized version of the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) was installed on a 30-node distributed memory supercomputer (IBM RS/6000 SP) at the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, GA (Zaphiris, Edwards and Snook [1997]; Snook, Christidis and Edwards [1997]; and Edwards, Snook and Christidis [...

11.8 Porting the High Resolution Limited Area Forecast System (hlafs) on Shared and Distributed Memory Hardware Platforms for Real-time Operational Weather Forecasting in China

Weather forecasting via numerical techniques, imposes high demands on computer processing time and other computer resources. The use of high resolution numerical techniques for the discretization of the modeling domain in space, the incorporation of more complex representations of physical processes or the exploitation of longer time scale phenomena can easily consume the resources of a large c...

Parallel architecture and algorithms for space weather prediction – A review

A critical review is presented in this paper on parallel computing, including parallel algorithms and parallel architectures. Emphasis is laid on different interconnection networks, including recent efficient multi-mesh network. The role of parallel computing for design and analysis of adaptive sampling are pointed out. Different parallel computing platforms and their basic characteristics, alo...
